Eco Council
Kewstoke's Green Council
The Green Council meet at least twice a term to discuss issues and ideas to improve the school grounds and garden, promote recycling, sustainability and environmental issues. Two pupils from each class are democratically elected to the Green Council each year. The Council plans to come up with one new idea during each meeting to take back to their class to discuss. Larger issues can then be presented to the Headteacher to discuss new whole school initiatives. Council members seek the views of their classmates and these are brought back to council meetings. All children within the school know that they have a voice and that their views are listened to. This helps to develop their sense of community and responsibility.
Who Will Represent the Council This Year?
Wild Spaces project
This year, the Eco-council will be working with the Butterfly Conservation Society to create some butterfly-friendly spaces in our school grounds. We are going to be working on three mini-projects, starting in the Spring. These will be:
1. Planters on the playground and front of school with butterfly-friendly herbs and sensory plants
2. Raised vegetable beds and bug hotels
3. Wild flower bank and seating area
We are very grateful to the Butterfly conservation charity for giving us a £700 grant towards tools and plants, and we look forward to making our school grounds a better place for wildlife!.
